Chat with CHATGPT about Educational Technology

I used ChatGPT for my chat about the historical development and evolution of educational technology. This is the link to the chat I had: https://bit.ly/chatGPTBlogpost1

I have used ChatGPT before so I did have some experience with using this program. I choose to start the conversation by telling the chatbot that I was a graduate student in educational technology and I assign the bot the role of an educational technology professional. I did this because I wanted to get more relevant answers. Using ChatGPT is pretty simple. The information is presented in an easy to read format with sub categories to help breakup text. When I asked the chatbot "How can AI-driven tools help tailor learning experiences to individual students' needs?" It gave me the benefits and challenges to consider. I like that it does not just focus on the benefits and gives all sides to a question.

I am fairly confident in the accuracy and validity of the output I was given. While I have used ChatGPT before, I have very little background knowledge on how it works. The reason I am confident with the accuracy is because I have been told that chatbots work by searching the internet. The few times I have used ChatGPT I try to find other sources online that share the information to confirm the output I was given.

I feel like I have a good grasp on the historical development and evolution of educational technology. ChatGPT presented me with information from the pre-20th century to the present. I received information on how technology went from the printing press to radio teaching programs and eventually one-to-one technology. I also understand the seven key concepts that teachers need to understand. The concepts are media evolution, learning theories, access and equity, instructional design, interactivity and feedback, balancing innovation and pedagogy, and lastly ethics and responsible use. This table was a part of the output about key teacher concepts. The information is simplified and easy to read.

📝 Summary Table from chatGPT

Concept

Why It Matters

Media evolution (chalkboards to AI)

Tools change, but the purpose is to enhance learning — choose wisely.

Learning theories

Align technology use with evidence-based pedagogy.

Access and equity

Ensure all students have opportunities to learn effectively.

Instructional design

Plan intentionally, match tools to goals.

Interactivity and feedback

Use technology to enhance engagement and learning.

Balancing innovation and pedagogy

Avoid tech for tech’s sake — focus on learning.

Ethics and responsible use

Model and teach digital citizenship.

I would verify the information I was presented by looking at other sources. I would find scholarly journals, textbooks, research papers, or other authoritative sources about educational technology and the key concepts.

My prompts seemed to be fairly effective. I tried to be specific and use some of the same wording from the output I received from the previous question. Every time I asked a question I was given very detailed feedback.

If I were to do this again, I would do it without assigning myself or the chatbot a role. I would like to see how the responses differentiate with and without a role assigned.

I would not allow my students to use this AI tool. I think students would become too dependent on it and use it to do their work for them. One question I asked the chatbot was "What tools can be used to ensure students are not using AI to cheat?" I was given multiple examples of plagiarism detection tools, creating authentic assessments that link to personal experiences, and clear digital policies. I think as students mature and reach high school ChatGPT would be a wonderful tool to help with research. I teach elementary and I do not think they are mature enough to use this tool and not cheat with it.
